The social media app now supports an initial set of eight ‘Face Filters’ which add live special effects to your selfies, such as twitching animal ears or a butterfly crown. If all of this sounds very familiar, it’s probably because you’ve already seen these features in Snapchat.

The Face Filters, activated by opening the camera and tapping a new face icon at the bottom right of the screen, can be used on either the front or rear-facing camera and also work with Instagram’s short, looping ‘Boomerang’ video clips. Recordings can then be added to your Instagram story or sent directly to friends from within the app.

Instagram has today announced a new update which includes a feature that will be very familiar to fans of its arch-rival, Snapchat.

The update also brings with it a ‘Rewind’ mode for videos which lets you create clips which play backwards as a special effect and a new hashtag sticker which takes your viewers to a page of related content with a simple tap. The hashtags can also be added under regular text, just like mentions.

Additionally, the app has now added an eraser brush which, as the name suggests, erases sections of anything you may have drawn. Instagram suggests using the feature creatively by covering your entire image with one colour and then selectively erasing sections to reveal the photograph below.

Instagram now has over 700 million monthly users and with over 200 million using the Stories feature every day, it doesn’t have to work too hard to keep ahead of Snapchat, especially when it continues to replicate its most popular features. Could Face Filters be the final nail in the coffin for Snapchat?
